TV VS. BOOKS

Just because there are so many more forms of entertainment available to the twenty-first century consumer, doesn’t mean that we don’t like to still learn, and be entertained by seeing printed words on a page in a great book.

Books are still significant because when you read, you have so much more scope for the imagination.  They get your brain working so much more than sitting in front of the tube hurting your eyes, and your wallet.  Advertising doesn’t really occur in a book, maybe the occasional push for another book on the last few pages of the book... But when you watch a half hour show on TV 10 minutes of that time is devoted to trying to persuade you to pull out your wallet and spend your cash!

Books are a portal to an alternative world, back in time a thousand years, or life on the other side of the planet and MUCH, much more.  Although you may be able to see that in a cable show, you aren’t seeing it how YOU would see it individually like you do in a book; in a movie it’s as the director of the film would see the characters.  Now, I don’t mind first reading a book, and then watching a movie that sticks to the plot of the book and does the book justice.   But if I have already seen the movie of the book, and if I try to read the book, it’s a lot more difficult to stay interested in the book, because I already know what’s going to happen.
While reading a book, you are engaging your brain to learn grammar, spelling, and usage just by being exposed to the writing.  It’s by far easier to research and look up what you’ve learned in a book, rather than something gathered from a TV show.  You must use books, and be able to read and comprehend books to be a good student.

When I’m reading it’s atmospheric stress relief or just a great relaxer, whereas the TV being on just doesn’t do it for me usually.  You can take a book to a local coffee shop, you can’t do that with your TV.  For me when I finish reading a book it feels like I’ve accomplished something, more culture has been explored, etc. My parents have always said when it comes to life the things that make a difference are “the people you meet, and the books you read.”

Books such as the Bible have the words to change your life, literally, for eternity.  It says in Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  It’s true! Books have the time tested unchanging way of keeping thoughts and events fresh, real, and vital to modern everyday life.

(Wrote this for one of my classes today. Thought I'd share it. Leave a comment if you wish!)
P.S. The book I'm reading now is part of the Hunger Games series. If you like books that grab you and make you want to read this series is for you. It's pretty intense. :)
